Greece – Athens and Peloppenese

Athens

A city we have visited several times. On our last visit, we had researched and found a low cost hotel with a roof view of the Acropolis. This was used for several day and night time daubs (and the odd tincture!)

The highlight of course is the Acropolis with the Parthenon and other temples and monuments. Standing here brings an awareness of antiquity, its culture, art, skills and sophistication.

It is greatly complemented by the New Acropolis Museum which displays and gives a great impression of the ancient sculpture. The exhibits and, very importantly, the staff were very helpful in explaining the background and evolution of this impressive culture. There are many other sights and monuments seen. Interesting also were visits to other parts of the city, such as Monastiriki and observation of city life.

Of course a highlight was a visit to the National Gallery, which has its exquisite art collection – a few reproduced here.

Peloppenese

We spent several weeks rambling about this region so steeped in History and culture which has played such a role since ancient times. Highlights Sparta, Nafplio, Mycenae, Mani, Corinth (see photos). Also very interesting is the landscape with its many villages (current and past) including seaside fishing villages such as the dramatic Vathia at the very south.
